THYROID SURGERY

The thyroid is a small gland shaped like a butterfly. It’s located in the lower front part of the neck, just below the voice box. The thyroid produces hormones that the blood carries to every tissue in the body. It helps regulate metabolism that helps in converting food to energy.

Sometimes the thyroid produces too much hormone. It may also develop structural problems, such as swelling and the growth of cysts or nodules. Thyroid surgery may be necessary when these problems occur. However it has to be noted that at Gurgaon ENT Centre, India not all thyroid problems need surgery, some of them can be treated through regular medications. Females may develop hyperthyroidism during the pregnancy period that can be treated through medications only. On the other hand in case there is a suspicious growth or swelling in thyroid gland then our best ENT Surgeon Dr Priyanjana generally advises certain radiological investigations followed by FNAC test to know the nature of growth. In case there is a chance that it may cause problem in future then a hemi or complete thyroidectomy is advised at Gurgaon ENT Centre, India

CONDITIONS

Thyroid cancer - Cancer is the most common reason for thyroidectomy. If you have thyroid cancer, removing most, if not all, of your thyroid will likely be a treatment option.

Noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter) - Removing all or part of your thyroid gland is an option if you have a large goiter that is uncomfortable or causes difficulty breathing or swallowing or, in some cases, if the goiter is causing hyperthyroidism.

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)- Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. If you have problems with anti-thyroid drugs and don't want radioactive iodine therapy, thyroidectomy may be an option.

Suspicious thyroid nodules. Some thyroid nodules can't be identified as cancerous or noncancerous after testing a sample from a needle biopsy. Doctors may recommend that people with these nodules have thyroidectomy if the nodules have an increased risk of being cancerous.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT

There are several types of thryoid surgery that are performed at Gurgaon ENT Centre India by our chief ENT surgeon Dr Priyanjana A Sharma:

Lobectomy- Sometimes a nodule, inflammation, or swelling affects only half of the thyroid gland. When this happens, a doctor will remove only one of the two lobes. The part left behind should retain some or all of its function.

Sub-Total ThyroidectomyA subtotal thyroidectomy removes the thyroid gland but leaves behind a small amount of thyroid tissue. This preserves some thyroid function. We have seen at Gurgain ENT Centre that patients who have undergone sub-total thyroidectomy may develop hypothyroidism but that can be managed through medication and suppliments.

Sub-Total ThyroidectomyA total thyroidectomy removes the entire thyroid and the thyroid tissue. This surgery is appropriate when nodules, swelling, or inflammation affect the entire thyroid gland, or when cancer is present.

All the above surgeries are performed under general anaesthesia and patient needs to be in the hospital for about 2-3 days depending upon the type of surgery performed.
