HEARING LOSS TREATMENT

Hearing loss is common with growing age. However hearing loss can also happen in early ages as well which can be due to loud noise, trauma to ear drum or congenital. Hearing loss is defined in three ways:

Sensorineural Hearing Loss: is the most common type of hearing loss. It is permanent and caused either by damage to tiny hair-like cells in the inner ear or to the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve carries important information about the loudness, pitch and meaning of sounds to the brain. The incedence of SNHL has grown exponentially because of loud noise and excessive usage of ear plugs.

Conductive Hearing Loss: is caused by a mechanical problem in the outer or middle ear or an obstruction in the ear canal, such as ear wax that blocks sound from getting to the eardrum. It can be permanent, but more often it is temporary and can be treated. It can also be due to traumatic ear drum perforation which at times need surgery.

Mixed Hearing Loss: results when there are components of both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.

CONDITIONS

Ear Drum Perforation: Ear Drum Perforation is one of the very common causes for hearing loss. At Gurgaon ENT Centre, India we get patients with trauma to ear drum because of injury. Hearing loss caused due to traumatic perforation is generally temporary.

Ear Wax: Earwax can block the ear canal and prevent conduction of sound waves. Earwax removal can help restore your hearing.

Ear Infection: Ear infection either in middle or inner ear can lead to hearing loss which may or may not recoverable.

Congenital: There are cases where the child is born with hearing loss which ranges from 50% to 100%. These days most of the hospitals have started doing screening for new born for any deficit in hearing or hearing loss. However for new borns that do not get the screening done we have the facility at Gurgaon ENT Centre for screening.

SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT

The symptoms of hearing loss problem generally are not noticed at early stage but when it actually starts causing problem in day to day life. In most of the cases where infection is the main reason person realizes that there is some problem in the ears only when she starts feeling pain or starts getting ear discharge. Similarly in case of trauma to ear it is the pain and numbness that will make you feel that something is wrong. Unfortunately in cases with congenital hearing loss it is the parents who realize that the child is not listening.

The treatment options for the hearing loss depends upon the main reason which has caused hearing loss.

- In case the hearing loss is due to pile up of wax inside the ear then once the ear wax is cleaned it will restore the hearing.

- In case the hearing loss is due to ear infection especially middle ear or inner ear then it would need surgery called mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty which is done to clear the infection and put a fresh ear drum.

- In case the hearing loss is SNHL i.e. because of nerve then it is not sure that the full hearing can be restored but the dip in the hearing can be stopped through medications.

- In case the hearing loss is congenital then the child is advised 3 months of hearing aid trial followed by cochlear implants.
